Myth

Chiron was smarter than your average centaur. He was well-known for his wisdom and knowledge of medicine. In fact, he tutored many famous heroes, like Jason, Perseus and Heracles.

It was Heracles who accidentally caused Chiron’s death. Heracles was having dinner with a centaur called Pholus. Heracles fancied some wine and Pholus opened a cask. The centaurs smelled the wine (they have a nose for that kind of thing) and started a fight. Heracles shot back with poisoned arrows and accidentally shot Chiron, his old tutor. Chiron was immortal but the poisoned arrow caused him unbearable pain. So much pain that when Heracles asked Chiron to give up his immortality to free Prometheus, he readily agreed. Chiron’s half brother Zeus took pity on him and placed him among the stars as a constellation.
